  • Windows 7 End of Life

With a matter of weeks to go until Windows 7 reaches end of life, what does this mean for your business and what’s next? Windows 7 is a ten year old operating system (OS) and in January 2015 Microsoft ended mainstream support, with free technical assistance and software updates, bug fixes, security patches and new functionality from Windows Update no longer available after this date. But even with this deadline looming, according to Russian security firm Kaspersky, nearly half of all small to medium sized businesses (SMBs) are still using the outdated OS, and even large organisations are affected, with the NHS admitting in July that they still had one million PCs running on Windows 7. So why the delay? Microsoft recommends that Windows 10 (more on this here) is best installed on a new machine, and for many, this is economically unviable. Older PCs may not have software in place that is able to run the new OS and let’s not underestimate the human tendency towards familiarity – for some, the change (yes, that horrible word) to a new system is just not very palatable! The good news is you will still be able to run Windows 7 after the EOL deadline. The bad news? Failing to upgrade your operating system will leave you significantly more susceptible to viruses and malware attacks. In short, your business will be vulnerable, and hackers will be itching to take advantage of weak spots. MS will be offering support until 2023, but at a cost, expected to increase dramatically year on year. Time to upgrade to Windows 10! More on this here.
  • Beginners Guide To Cyber Security

Cyber threats are on the rise, and far from being immune to such security risks, many such criminals consider small businesses to be easy targets. Here we outline the main types that you should be aware of:

Brute Force or Password Attacks –

This form of attack involves the perpetrator attempting to gain access to the network, by using a programme to establish a viable password. The most simple ways of avoiding this form of attack are to avoid using a universal password, and to regularly change passwords as standard practice.

Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) –

This type of cyber attack is essentially a bombardment of the server, leading it to become overwhelmed as a result. The system slows significantly or even crashes completely, meaning that the system is unusable until these numerous interactions at the root of the problem are blocked or cancelled.

    Phishing –

This technique utilises social media and email to dupe users into handing over sensitive information, company data or even downloading the entire content of their server. By implying that the communication is received via a trusted source (such as banks, or other account holding organisations) victims unwittingly provide access to your businesses secured network. It is worth noting that such types of communication are increasingly sophisticated in their approach, and even for tech savvy users, such scams are easier than you might imagine to fall victim to.

    Malware –

If a download is initiated via a successful phishing attack, it is highly likely that the received programme is malicious. A well-known example is a Trojan virus – a form of malware which disguises itself as legitimate software, carrying out its intended purpose without the knowledge of the user. There are of course many different types of malware with a variety of intended actions, including manipulating the system’s code to spying on the user’s activity.

    Ransomware –

This type of malware is amongst the most damaging and sophisticated cyber threats out there. Once opened, it is designed to lock down your system and encrypt the computer or server, until a ransom (often in the form of Bitcoin) is paid to release the device. Even if/ when the required sum is deposited, the hackers often don’t fulfil their side of the deal, meaning even more frustration, disruption and cost to the business.

Internet of Things (IoT)/ Algorithm Manipulation –

Increasingly, businesses have become dependent on IoT devices such as cloud-computable and wearable tech. The danger with this movement is that secure and sensitive data becomes more vulnerable. Furthermore, with automation making companies more reliant on algorithms to interpret and apply their data, the risk of these codes and systems being compromised is elevated, and without frequent monitoring and occasional human intervention, businesses are left wide open to this form of attack.

Cyber threats are undoubtably sophisticated, and the consequences of a cyber attack potentially catastrophic to small businesses. In essence, it presents a daunting prospect to organisations who are frequently unprepared for such attacks. Recruiting the assistance of an IT service provider with expertise in cyber security, such as Simply Tech Ltd, offers the most comprehensive and resource- friendly solution.

  • Why Backup is Important

If you’ve ever experienced data loss at work, without a backup in place, then you can probably stop reading now. At best, the resulting chaos and time spent duplicating work can be laborious and frustrating as hell. At worst, failing to back up data regularly can result in enormous cost, and even the closure of your business. It’s a small habit to implement, but is absolutely business critical.

All this being said, 60% of small businesses still don’t back up daily, and many don’t do it at all! If you are backup-shy, the following article details some compelling reasons why you should rethink this.

    Loss of Money:

A survey of IT leaders across 24 countries revealed that incidents of data loss rose by a massive 400% in the last two years, with a combined loss of $1.7 trillion dollars.

For small to medium sized businesses, it is easy to think that these big numbers wouldn’t apply, but in reality, even small data losses (fewer than 100 files) are estimated to potentially cost between £14,000-£28,000.

    Natural Disasters:

With global warming threatening to cause a rise in freak weather conditions and natural disasters, this seemingly unlikely threat to business is more of a concern than you might think.

Worrying statistics from FEMA report that following natural disasters, 40% of businesses fail to reopen, and of those that do get back on their feet, 25% fail within the first year, and 90% have failed two years post event.

Regularly backing up your data means that should your business suffer such an event, you will be able to get back to business quickly, without the need to essentially start from scratch.

    Ransomware:

Ransomware security breaches are on the rise. Once hit with such malware, whole networks are instantly encrypted and a ransom is required to recover access to your businesses data.

A simple daily backup means that such situations are easily avoided, and your valuable data can simply be reinstalled, without incurring this cost.

In a nutshell, regular updates are probably the single most important action you can take to prevent a network disaster. Ensuring secure, clean data will keep your business on track in cases of hacking, natural disaster and data loss caused by data corruption or even simple human error.

Developing and implementing the right backup strategy for your business is critical. Simply Honest Tech can work with you to put in place a manageable, effective plan to keep your business running smoothly, so that you can focus on doing what do you best.

  • Still Running Windows 7? Prepare for Some New Year Nagging!

It’s a subject we’ve covered before, and now that the date for end of life on this outdated OS is looming, Windows 7 users can look forward to a new, more aggressive warning from Microsoft in the New Year.

On the 15 th January (the day after the dreaded EOL deadline), those still running Windows 7 can expect full-screen warnings that they will no longer receive free security updates for their OS. The push notification from Microsoft will explicitly warn users: "Your Windows 7 PC is out of support." offering three options – “Remind me later”, “Learn more” or “Don't remind me again”. Only if the latter is selected will these reminders cease.

The warning will reiterate the PC’s vulnerability to malware and viruses, caused by no security updates, no software updates and no tech support, stating that: "Microsoft strongly recommends using Windows 10 on a new PC for the latest security features and protection against malicious software."

Microsoft began warning Pro users periodically (provided they were not domain- joined) via a popup in October, but this new full-screen advice is embedded in the monthly rollup KB4530734, which Microsoft made available to Windows 7 SP1 users on 10 th December as part of its Patch Tuesday set of updates.

  • Restarting your computer – Why This Simple First Step Has More Value Than You Think.

It’s the age-old joke that will plague IT Support to the end of time.

Hey, sometimes we even mix it up a bit – “Can you reboot?”, “Try powering down the machine” etc etc.

It means the same thing, and honestly, it isn’t lazy advice. There is real logic and value to this simple act.

So why does it work? Put simply, electronic devices are state based machines. They start in one state, and proceed from there, building in stages from one state to the next. Programmes are the same, and your computer’s software will be running many simultaneously. If one of these programmes has a bug, or there are conflicting commands running simultaneously, you can find yourself on the phone to IT Support (or tempted to throw the machine out of the window, which we don’t recommend by the way).

Powering down your machine (and yes, sometimes this might involve physically removing the plug and allowing the machine to fully deplete its power) enables what is essentially a reinitialization of the device and a return to its original state.

Of course, it may not fix the original problem, which is why we are always on call to investigate if a reboot doesn’t resolve the situation. It’s easier and faster to start from a clean state than identify and fix any problems that may be occurring — in fact, in some cases, it may be impossible to fix problems without beginning from that clean state. As a time-effective and logical first step, a simple reboot is a great solution.

An effective digital workplace can add significant value to your business and deliver a higher quality of service to your clients.
